Kana Memory Methods: What Makes Hiragana Stick
Kana is the smallest memorisation task in Japanese: 46 basic hiragana, 46 basic katakana, and a set of mechanical extensions. Nothing else in the language is this finite, and nothing else is this easy to get wrong, because the failure is rarely effort. People who spend a month on the chart and still stumble are usually using one channel, one direction, and one order.
Two ideas explain almost every kana failure and every kana success. First, recognition and recall are separate skills, and you have probably only trained one of them. Second, memory is built by retrieving, not by reviewing — so the method that feels hardest at the moment is usually the one working.
Here are the methods that hold up, roughly in the order they earn their time.
Method 1: Learn the grid, not the sequence
The kana chart is two-dimensional: rows share a consonant, columns share a vowel. The か行 is か (ka), き (ki), く (ku), け (ke), こ (ko) — one rule, five characters.
This matters for memory because it compresses the material. Instead of 46 independent shape-sound pairs, you are holding about ten consonant rules, five vowels, and four irregularities: し (shi), ち (chi), つ (tsu) and ふ (fu).
Then learn the rows in dictionary order — あ (a), か (ka), さ (sa), た (ta), な (na), は (ha), ま (ma), や (ya), ら (ra), わ (wa), ん (n) — because that is the order every table and index in Japanese uses. A quirky personal order feels easier in week one and costs you every look-up afterwards. The two-week hiragana schedule builds directly on this.
Method 2: Mnemonics, used as scaffolding
A mnemonic hijacks your visual memory, which is much stronger than your memory for abstract symbols. Some work specifically because the English word is close to the sound:

Note what makes these work: the picture and the sound are linked, not just the picture and an English word. A mnemonic that only reminds you of a shape ("あ is a person saying ah") does half the job.
Two caveats. Mnemonics are personal — someone else's story frequently will not stick for you, so invent your own. And they expire: a mnemonic you are still using in week three is slowing your reading down, because it inserts a step between the shape and the sound. Use them to get through the first pass, then let repetition erase them.
Method 3: Recognition before production
The most common beginner error is demanding that they be able to write き (ki) from memory on day two. That is the harder skill, trained before the easier one.
Split the task. Pass one: see the character, produce the sound. Writing comes after. If you can look at れ (re) and ね (ne) and know which is which within a second, you can read. That is what unlocks sentences, and sentences are where the real consolidation happens.
Writing is still worth adding later — it is worth being honest that learners vary here. Some find handwriting accelerates recognition, because the motor trace gives the shape a second handle. Others find it slow and mostly cosmetic. Either way, if you do write, use correct stroke order from the beginning; a wrong order is invisible to you and becomes permanent.
Method 4: Handwriting as a discrimination drill
The real value of handwriting is not the writing. It is that the pen forces you to decide what makes two similar shapes different, and that decision is what your reading speed depends on.
Write the confusable pairs side by side and describe the difference out loud:

Five minutes of this beats thirty minutes of copying a chart in order, because copying in order never asks you to tell anything apart.
Method 5: Sound, not spelling
Kana is a writing system for sounds, and if you learned the shapes silently you have learned half of them. Listen to a kana audio track and point at the character as you hear it. Then reverse it: look at a character and say it aloud before checking.
This is where romaji quietly misleads English speakers. し is not "shih", つ is not "tsoo", ふ is not "foo", and ら行 is not an English "r" or "l". If your internal audio is English, you will mispronounce words you can read perfectly, and no amount of chart drilling fixes that — pronunciation is a separate piece of work.
Method 6: Shuffle, and test both directions
If you have only ever seen kana in あいうえお order, you have memorised a song. Shuffle, or accept that you will freeze the first time a real sentence starts with を (wo).
Then train both directions. They are different skills with different difficulty:

Recognition and recall are separate skills. Recognition (kana to sound) is the one that makes reading possible and it arrives fast. Recall (sound to kana) is the one that makes writing possible and it lags behind badly. Beginners routinely mistake a strong recognition skill for a weak overall memory, when the truth is that they never trained recall at all — and beginners just as routinely panic about weak recall when their recognition is genuinely fine for reading.
Decide which one you actually need. If your goal is to read and type, recognition is the priority. If you want to write by hand, recall gets its own separate practice.
Method 7: Produce, do not just look
Every method above is input. The strongest single addition is output with feedback, which is why typing kana by its romaji is such an efficient drill: you see か, you type ka, and the screen tells you immediately whether you were right.
That loop builds three links at once — the shape, the sound, and the keystrokes — and the immediate correction is what makes it faster than self-testing with a paper chart, where you can fool yourself for a full second before checking. A word of caution: typing trains recognition and recall of the kana-sound pair, not handwriting. It is a different skill from holding a pen, and both are legitimate.
Where spaced repetition fits — and where it does not
Spaced repetition software is the right tool for thousands of vocabulary items and kanji, where the volume makes scheduling the whole problem. For kana it is optional. The set is small, it appears in literally every sentence you will ever read, and natural exposure does the spacing for free after the first two weeks.
If you do want a deck, keep it small and specific:
- Include both directions — kana to sound and sound to kana — as separate cards, since they are separate skills.
- Cap new cards at five to ten a day. Kana is not a volume problem, and a 200-card backlog on day four is how people quit.
- Retire cards early. Once a character is instant, stop reviewing it; the deck should shrink, not grow.
- Do not add whole words to it. Words belong in sentences, not in a kana deck — that is a vocabulary problem with its own method.
Charts versus real words
There is one thing that beats every method above, and it is not a technique. It is reading actual words.
Drilling the chart trains a shape in isolation. Reading ねこ (neko, "cat") asks your brain to do something better: attach the shape to a meaning, a sound and a context at once. When you meet ね (ne) again in ねこ, you are not recalling an abstract symbol, you are recognising a word. The retrieval is stronger and the motivation is higher, because something is being said.
The efficient arrangement is: two or three days of chart work to get coverage, then move into words and sentences while continuing to review the characters you miss.
Common mistakes for English speakers
1. Staying in あいうえお order. Ordered recall is not recall. Shuffle from day three.
2. Training only recognition, then judging your memory by your recall. You cannot write ぬ (nu) from memory after a week of reading practice, and that is normal, not a defect.
3. Waiting until the chart is perfect to read anything. It never becomes perfect this way. Read early; the reading is what perfects it.
4. Using English sounds as the reference. "fu" and "tsu" have no clean English equivalent. Model them from audio.
5. Ignoring katakana until it ambushes you. It is the same 46 sounds in new shapes, and loanwords like コーヒー (koohii, "coffee") and コンピューター (konpyuutaa, "computer") are everywhere. Learn the hiragana versus katakana split deliberately instead.
6. Studying kana as a subject for a month. Past two weeks, additional chart time has poor returns. Move on and let exposure finish the job.
