Japanese Typing Speed: What Actually Limits You
Search for a target Japanese typing speed and you will find confident numbers. Treat them with suspicion — including anything you would find here. The measurement itself is genuinely ambiguous, and the number is not the thing that is holding you back anyway.
Here is the honest version.
Why words per minute does not work for Japanese
WPM is meaningful in English because English words are separated by spaces. Count the words, divide by minutes. Done.
Japanese has no spaces. Deciding where one "word" ends is a judgment call, and different tools make it differently — so a WPM figure for Japanese depends on a segmentation choice that nobody standardized. That alone makes cross-source comparisons meaningless.
What Japanese typing tests actually measure:

Both are legitimate; they are not interchangeable. And here is the subtlety that makes even these slippery: the number of keystrokes per character is not fixed.

Every kana is exactly one character, but it costs between one and three keystrokes to type. Now compound that across a word:

A passage heavy in vowel kana flatters your characters-per-minute. A passage dense in し, ち and つ punishes it. So a single speed number is partly a measurement of the text you happened to type, not only of you. This is why record-chasing on Japanese typing sites is a narrower skill than it first appears.
What actually limits a learner
For a beginner, speed is almost never limited by fingers. It is limited upstream, and there are three distinct bottlenecks in order:
1. Kana retrieval. You see き and have to consciously think "ki" before your fingers can move. This is the dominant cost for months, and it is a recognition problem, not a typing problem. No amount of finger speed helps while this step requires deliberation.
2. Chunking. Once kana are automatic individually, the next cost is assembling them. A fluent typist reads さくら as one unit and produces sakura as one motor pattern. A learner reads it as three separate retrieval events. This is where most of the remaining time goes.
3. Raw finger speed. Only now does the thing people assume matters — how fast your fingers move — become the limiter. For most learners this is the last thing to matter and the least worth training deliberately.
The practical consequence: practicing finger speed when your bottleneck is kana retrieval is wasted effort. If you are still thinking about what each kana sounds like, drills and typing games will not help much. Read more kana, then type.
Measure yourself, not a leaderboard
Since published figures rest on inconsistent unit conventions, the only benchmark that means anything is your own, measured consistently.
Pick a fixed passage — a paragraph you can already read — and time yourself on it, recording both speed and accuracy. Repeat the same passage weekly. Because the text is constant, changes in the numbers are changes in you. That comparison is real; a comparison against a stranger's number from a different tool is not.
Track accuracy first. Speed without accuracy is not speed — it is retyping.
Accuracy is the lever, not speed
A useful rule of thumb: do not push speed until accuracy is consistently around 95% or better. Below that, most of your gained "speed" is being spent on corrections, and you are practicing errors into muscle memory. Errors are far more expensive than they look:
- A wrong keystroke costs the keystroke, plus recognizing the error, plus the backspace, plus the correct keystroke.
- The wrong motor pattern gets practiced each time, and wrong patterns are slower to unlearn than to learn.
So the correct training order is accuracy → automaticity → speed. Speed is what is left over when the other two are solved, not a separate skill to chase.
What actually makes you faster
Drill the irregular romaji until they are not irregular. Most of the kana chart is mechanical: consonant plus vowel, one predictable keystroke pattern. Five entries break that rhythm — し (shi), ち (chi), つ (tsu), ふ (fu), and ん. These are the ones you hesitate on, and hesitation is what the clock is measuring. Type whole sentences, not isolated kana. Isolated characters never teach chunking, which is bottleneck #2. Sentences do, because real words have shapes you start to recognize as units. This is the core of romaji typing practice.
Read ahead of your hands. Fluent typists in any language are reading one or two units ahead while their fingers finish the current one. If you only ever read the character you are currently typing, you have no pipeline and your speed is capped by your slowest step.
Stop looking at the keyboard. If you need your eyes to find keys, each character costs a visual search. Learn the key positions so your hands stay on the home row. This is one place where dedicated finger-speed practice does pay off — but only for this, and only after retrieval is automatic.
Practice in short, focused sessions. Fifteen focused minutes daily beats an hour once a week, for the same reason every skill works that way: consistency builds automaticity, and automaticity is the thing you are actually building.
The realistic expectation
Being specific about hours or a target character count would mean inventing precision the measurement does not support. What can be said honestly is the shape of the curve:
- The first weeks feel slow and awkward, and your speed will drop as you stop hunting for keys and start thinking about kana.
- You will plateau once individual kana are automatic, and the next gain comes from chunking — which requires sentence practice, not more kana drills.
- Beyond that, improvement is gradual and mostly comes from reading more Japanese, because speed follows familiarity with the material.
If you are improving week over week on the same passage, you are doing it right. That is the only signal that carries information.
