Romaji vs Kana Input: Which One Should You Learn?

When you add a Japanese keyboard to your computer, you are quietly asked to make a choice that almost no textbook explains: ローマ字入力 (romaji nyuuryoku, romaji input) or かな入力 (kana nyuuryoku, kana input). Both produce the same Japanese. They get there in completely different ways, and the difference decides how long it takes before you can type anything at all.

This is a comparison for someone who just wants to know which one to learn. The answer first, then the reasoning.

The short version

Learn romaji input first. For the large majority of learners it is also the only one you ever need.

Kana input is a genuine, fast, professional-grade option. It also asks for hardware most learners do not own, and a memorization project most learners do not need. Revisit it later if a real reason shows up. Nothing about learning romaji first locks you out of it.

What the two modes actually are

Romaji input spells every kana out in Latin letters. To produce し (shi, "shi") you press three keys: s, h, i. To produce か (ka, "ka") you press two: k, a. The vowels are single keys — あ (a, "a") is just a.

Kana input puts one kana on each physical key. You press the key labelled し (shi, "shi") and し appears. One key, one kana, no spelling step, no decisions.

Both are settings inside the same input method, not different software. On Windows and macOS you switch between them in the IME's own settings; on iPhone you pick one or both when you add the keyboard.

The hardware question decides most of it

Kana input only works if you know where the kana live on the keyboard. Those positions are printed on JIS keyboards — the Japanese physical layout, where each key carries a kana legend alongside the Latin letter.

If you do not have a JIS keyboard, that is the whole problem in one sentence. You can still turn kana input on in software with a US keyboard in front of you, but nothing on the keys tells you where き (ki, "ki") or ね (ne, "ne") is. You would be typing from a printed chart with your eyes, which is slower than spelling in romaji and stays slower for a long time.

Buying a JIS keyboard is possible but awkward: they cost more outside Japan, they are rarely stocked in local shops, and they move everyday symbols like @ and " to different positions from the US layout you are used to. You would be relearning your punctuation to gain nothing yet.

Romaji input works on the keyboard you already own, in the layout you already touch type. That is not a small convenience. It is the reason kana input is a deliberate second project rather than a default.

Keystroke counts, worked through

Here is where the two modes genuinely differ. Keystroke counts below assume a standard input method that accepts the common alternative spellings.

Notice the pattern. Romaji input runs at roughly two keystrokes per kana. Kana input runs at one, plus a little extra when voiced or small kana need a modifier.

Now a whole sentence — わたしはがくせいです (watashi wa gakusei desu, "I am a student"):

Roughly double. On a kana-heavy sentence, that gap is real, and it is the entire technical case for kana input.

Two honest caveats before you switch your plans.

First, fewer keystrokes does not automatically mean faster typing. Speed comes from automaticity, and you already have automaticity on Latin letters. A romaji typist running on muscle memory will beat a kana typist who is still thinking about where ぬ (nu, "nu") is. The keystroke advantage only pays out once the kana map is fully automatic, which is weeks of deliberate practice.

Second, the ratio is not a clean two-to-one across all text. Contracted sounds are where kana input gains most: きょう (kyou, "today") is four keystrokes in romaji and three keys on a kana keyboard, because the small ょ is a key of its own. Going the other way, ん (n, "n") can cost two keystrokes in romaji when a single n would be ambiguous, while kana input spends one key on it. The two effects partly cancel, which is why "close to double" is a fair summary rather than a precise multiplier.

The trap that only exists in romaji input

There is one place where kana input is conceptually simpler, and it is worth understanding because it confuses nearly every beginner.

With romaji input you are typing the kana's own name, not the sound of the word. So the particle は (wa, topic marker) is typed ha, even though it is read "wa". The particle へ (e, "to, toward") is typed he, read "e". を (wo, object marker) is typed wo and read "wo".

Kana input never makes you think about this. You press the key labelled は, and は comes out. You still read it "wa", but your hands never have to know that the spelling and the sound disagree. If the は/ha rule has been tripping you up, that is a fair point in kana input's favour.

Romaji input's rules are small in number and mostly obvious. し is shi, ち is chi, つ is tsu — the spellings look like the sounds. The exceptions are a short list: small っ, ん as nn, long vowels, and the は/へ particles above. Most learners can type a real sentence within an hour, badly, and improve from there.

Kana input is a fresh keyboard layout. English speakers who learned to touch type know how much practice that took. Kana input is a comparable project, with the added wrinkle that a Japanese keyboard has more kana than keys, so the voiced and small variants generally sit on a shifted layer you also have to learn. Nothing about it is hard. It is just a second keyboard to learn, taken on top of a language you are already learning.

What Japanese schools and typing contests use

The default in Japanese education is romaji input. Romaji itself — ローマ字 (roomaji), Japanese written in Latin letters — is part of the elementary school curriculum, and typing instruction builds on what students already know from that. If you learn romaji input, you are learning what a Japanese schoolchild learns.

Typing competitions agree. The Mainichi PC Input Contest, a long-running national typing contest, runs a dedicated romaji division and recommends romaji input; kana input contestants are allowed to take part, but the recommended path is romaji. That is a useful signal: kana input is fast enough to deserve a seat at the table, and it is still not the path the organisers point people toward.

On how many Japanese people use each mode, I cannot give you a number, and I would distrust one that arrives without a source. Reported shares vary wildly depending on who was surveyed and which device they had in mind, and the phone answer is different from the computer answer. Argue from the mechanics instead, which are stable: on a physical keyboard romaji is what is taught and what the hardware supports, and on a phone the 12-key flick keyboard is the familiar default. Those two facts do all the work a percentage would.

Who might reasonably prefer kana input later

  • Long-term residents who type Japanese for hours every day on a JIS keyboard and want the keystroke savings to compound. This is the strongest case.
  • People who were trained on it — colleagues, teachers or family who set them up that way, and for whom it is already automatic.
  • Learners who never learned to touch type Latin letters. If romaji input means hunting for each letter anyway, the one-key-per-kana map removes the spelling step and can compete. You still pay the cost of learning the kana map, so this is a genuine tradeoff rather than a free win.
  • Speed hobbyists. There are Japanese-designed layouts built purely for efficiency, such as 親指シフト (oyayubi shifuto, "thumb shift"), which use dedicated thumb keys. They need extra software or specific hardware and are a niche pursuit, not a beginner decision.

If none of those describe you, kana input can wait indefinitely.

What I would actually do

  1. Install a Japanese input method and set it to romaji input. Any keyboard you own works. If you need the steps, they are in Japanese keyboard setup.

  3. Ignore kana input entirely for now. It is a setting you can turn on in two years without having lost anything.

The one thing you should not do is learn kana input because it sounds more authentic. It is not more authentic; it is a different set of key positions for the same language. You can read Japanese perfectly without ever touching it, and you can learn it whenever you want: romaji input already taught you what every kana sounds like, which is the part that transfers. Whichever route you take, the limiting factor is how automatic the kana are, not how many keys each one costs — which is what typing speed is really about.
